Carbon Reduction Plan

Willows Health is committed to reducing the environmental impact of the services we provide while delivering safe, high-quality healthcare. We recognise that climate change is a significant public health issue and are committed to improving our environmental performance year after year.

Why this matters

Healthcare contributes significantly to the UK's carbon emissions, and the NHS has committed to becoming the world's first Net Zero national health service.

As a provider of NHS primary care services, we support these ambitions by continually reviewing how we deliver care, procure services and use technology to minimise our environmental impact.

Our commitment

We are committed to:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations where practical.
  • Improving energy efficiency throughout our estate.
  • Increasing the use of digital services that reduce unnecessary travel and paper usage.
  • Working with suppliers who share our sustainability ambitions.
  • Embedding environmental considerations into business planning and procurement decisions.
  • Reviewing and improving our environmental performance each year.

Governance

Environmental sustainability is considered as part of our organisational governance arrangements.

Responsibility for reviewing our Carbon Reduction Plan sits with senior leadership and the plan will be reviewed annually.

Current position

We are continuing to develop our carbon reporting capability.

As part of this work we are identifying our organisational emissions baseline and improving the collection of environmental performance data.

This includes reviewing:

  • Energy consumption
  • Business travel
  • Staff commuting
  • Waste management
  • Procurement
  • Digital infrastructure
  • Supply chain impacts

Once sufficient verified data has been collected, baseline emissions and annual progress reporting will be published on this page.

Where we are focusing

Digital First

We continue to invest in secure digital technologies that reduce paper usage, improve efficiency and enable patients to access services online.

Smarter Travel

Where appropriate we encourage virtual meetings and digital collaboration to reduce unnecessary travel while maintaining excellent patient care.

Responsible Procurement

We consider sustainability alongside quality, value and compliance when selecting suppliers and services.

Continuous Improvement

Environmental sustainability is an ongoing programme of improvement rather than a one-off initiative.

Our roadmap

  1. 2026

    • Establish emissions baseline
    • Improve environmental data collection
    • Formalise annual reporting
  2. 2027

    • Identify highest-impact emission sources
    • Implement targeted reduction initiatives
    • Increase supplier engagement
  3. Beyond

    • Continue reducing emissions
    • Review performance annually
    • Support wider NHS Net Zero ambitions

Frequently asked questions

Does Willows Health have a Net Zero target?

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and will continue to develop measurable reduction targets as our emissions reporting matures.

How often is this page updated?

This Carbon Reduction Plan is reviewed at least annually and updated whenever significant environmental initiatives or reporting improvements are introduced.

Why are there no emissions figures yet?

We are currently developing our organisational carbon baseline using verified operational data. We believe publishing accurate, evidence-based information is preferable to publishing estimates.

Keeping this plan up to date

We will publish updates to this page as our emissions baseline, reduction initiatives and annual progress reporting develop.
