Sick notes and fit notes

Find out when you need a fit note and how to request one.

If you are off work for 7 days or less

If you are off work for 7 calendar days or less, you usually do not need a fit note from a GP. You can self-certify.

If you have been off work for more than 7 calendar days, you may need a fit note.

If you are under the care of a hospital, the hospital team should provide a fit note where appropriate.
