Proxy access
Proxy access lets a parent, carer or authorised person access some GP online services for another patient.
What proxy access can be used for
Proxy access may allow someone to help manage parts of another patient's online GP services.
- ordering repeat prescriptions
- viewing some parts of the GP health record
- managing appointments where available
- supporting someone who needs help using online services
What you can see or do may depend on the patient's age, consent, safeguarding considerations and the online service being used.
Parents and children
Parents or guardians may be able to request proxy access for a child.
As children get older, their confidentiality and ability to make decisions must be considered. Access may change or be limited as a child becomes more able to manage their own healthcare.
The practice may need to review requests for child proxy access before granting access.
Carers and adults
A carer, family member or trusted person may be able to request proxy access for an adult if the patient agrees, or where there is suitable legal authority.
The practice may need to confirm consent or check supporting information before access is granted.
Consent and confidentiality
We must protect patient confidentiality. We will only give proxy access where it is safe and appropriate.
- the patient may need to give consent
- access may be limited to certain online services
- access may be refused or removed if there are safeguarding or confidentiality concerns
- patients can ask for proxy access to be changed or removed
How to request proxy access
To request proxy access, contact your practice. Staff will explain what information is needed and how the request will be reviewed.
Please do not send personal documents or clinical information by email unless the practice has specifically asked you to use an approved route.
NHS App and online services
Proxy access may be available through the NHS App or other GP online services, depending on the access that has been granted.
